Fine. I’ve eaten enough sad hotel eggs on the Riverwalk to write a memoir, so when I say these places are worth your time, I mean it.

San Antonio’s main drag is a tourist gauntlet, but just off the river you’ll find everything from a sophisticated, calm wine bar for grown-ups to a bar where they’ll put an insult on your head for four bucks. I’ve reviewed al pastor street tacos and a Celtic steak sandwich with equal enthusiasm, and yes, my standards are low.

That’s the trick. The list you’re about to scroll through is my hard-won survival guide to eating here without getting burned.

Trust my grumpy gut.

Flights worth splitting
Properly poached eggs
Attentive service wins
Sweet biscuit appetizers
Worth a return visit

I trudged into Alamo Biscuit Company & Panaderia River walk with the grim determination of a man who has been burned by too many sad hotel breakfasts. Then the sweet biscuit appetizers arrived, and I nearly wept. The flights are worth splitting, mostly so you can glare at your companion for taking the last bite. Properly poached eggs, mind you. That is a rarity that should be celebrated with a parade. The service is so attentive it borders on suspicious, but I appreciate the vigilance. This place earned a return visit on my list, and I don't say that lightly. My grumpy heart grew three sizes that day. Fine. It did.

Domingo Restaurant made me feel like I had stumbled into a secret handshake club for people who hate noise. The quiet riverwalk seating is a miracle in this town of blaring mariachi and drunken yells. I ordered the Mexican corn waffles because I was curious, and they were delicious, a sweet and savory puzzle I did not want to solve. The staff offered friendly recommendations without being pushy, which I respect. The atmosphere is sophisticated and calm, perfect for a walk-in diner like me who just wants a decent meal and some peace. I left feeling almost civilized. Almost.

New favorite riverside walk stop

Lo Cura is my new favorite spot to slink off the Riverwalk and pretend I am not surrounded by tourists. The cheerful staff and puppy-friendly patio sold me immediately. Five-dollar happy hour walking tacos? That is a price that makes my wallet weep with joy. The drinks are reasonably priced, which on the Riverwalk feels like finding a unicorn. It is a chill, off-path bar escape from the chaos. I sat, I sipped, I watched a dog chase its tail. Bliss. I have already planned my next riverside walk stop around this place. Do not tell my other bars. They will get jealous.

Fry bread is essential

Corinne San Antonio is where I go when I want to feel fancy but also eat with my hands. The truffle fries are divine, a salty little pile of heaven. The authentic pozole warmed my soul, and the pasta was perfect, not a mushy noodle in sight. Our server, Ryan, was superb, attentive without hovering, a rare skill. But the key lime pie stole the entire show. It was tart, sweet, and made me consider licking the plate. The fry bread is essential, do not skip it. I left in a food coma, and I would do it all again tomorrow. Maybe I will.

Bar Loretta is the kind of neighborhood joint I would fight to keep secret, but I am a writer, so my secrets are for sale. The inventive cocktails are worth returning for, each one a little science experiment that works. The service is attentive and friendly, like your weird, cool aunt. The food is fantastic, and the charming ambiance makes it perfect for an intimate birthday evening without the awkward group singing. The music was great, and the drinks were phenomenal. I had my birthday there last week. The staff pretended not to judge me when I ordered a second dessert. I respect that.

Monica’s vibrant waitstaff energy
Delicious salsa variety
Perfect for dates or families

Casa Catrina handles crowds like a seasoned pro, which is good because this place gets busy. The service was fast even when the place was packed, and the atmosphere was spotless and welcoming. Monica, our waitress, had a vibrant energy that made me feel like I was at a party I wasn't cool enough for. The salsa variety was delicious, each one with its own personality. It is perfect for dates or families, which is a wide net, but they cast it well. I watched a toddler and a grandpa both happily munching away. That is a sign of good food and good management. I approve.

Juicy Texas steak dip
Worth the side street detour

Texan Sizzle is a little off the main drag, and that is exactly why I like it. The chicken quesadilla was fresh and tasty, not some greasy microwave mess. The Texas steak dip was juicy, the kind of sandwich that requires multiple napkins and zero regrets. The staff was friendly and welcoming, which made up for the slightly confused look I gave the menu. Service was quick, and the prices were fair, a rare combo on the Riverwalk. Worth the side street detour, absolutely. I will be back the next time I want to avoid the tourist trap circus. That is often.

Quality cocktails and dessert
Attentive, friendly staff
Worth the dinner price
Great Riverwalk dining choice

Roam and Range delivers top-notch food and service, and I hate how much I enjoyed it because it means I have to admit I have standards. The cocktails were quality, the dessert was quality, everything was just quality. The staff was attentive and friendly, almost annoyingly so, but I got over it. It is worth the dinner price, which is not cheap, but you are not getting cheap anywhere on the Riverwalk. This is a great Riverwalk dining choice if you want to feel like a grown-up. I felt like a grown-up. Then I ordered a second glass of wine. That regressed things a bit.

Perfect for Sunday Funday
Bartenders keep drinks flowing
Great happy hour variety
Hottie flatbread is everything
Fun lounge-to-club vibe

Pink Shark is my go-to for Sunday Funday, and by that I mean I go there to drink margaritas and watch other people make poor decisions. The bartenders keep the drinks flowing like a river, which is appropriate given the location. The happy hour variety is impressive, and the hottie flatbread is everything, a cheesy, spicy mess that I cannot stop ordering. The vibe goes from fun lounge to club as the night wears on, so pace yourself. I did not pace myself. I have no regrets, only memories and a vague headache. It was worth it. It was definitely worth it.

Anaqua Garden Bar is a lush, relaxing garden oasis that made me forget I was in the middle of a city. The signature cocktails are expertly crafted, the kind of drinks that make you feel sophisticated even when you spill a little. The service was warm and attentive, standout in a town full of indifferent bar staff. The dog-friendly patio has pool views, which is a bonus for me because I like watching people swim while I drink. The ceviche and corn came out quick and delicious, perfect for snacking. I sat there for two hours. I do not regret a single minute.

Zinc Bistro & Bar Events Space

Zinc Bistro & Bar Events Space
Highlights
Phenomenal desserts worth trying
Great food at fair prices
Friendly staff, busy but worthwhile
Affordable dining on Riverwalk

Zinc Bistro & Bar Events Space has a name that is way too long, but the food is worth the extra syllables. The desserts are phenomenal, and I say that as a man who usually skips dessert to save money. The food is great at fair prices, which on the Riverwalk is practically a charitable act. The staff is friendly, and the place gets busy, but it is worth the wait. This is affordable dining on the Riverwalk, a phrase that feels like an oxymoron but is true. I had the dessert first. The waiter gave me a look. I ordered the dessert again for the road. No shame.

1800s Texas decor delightful

Helpful menu guidance offered
Pleasant music and atmosphere
Convenient parking across street

Crockett Tavern is decorated like the 1800s, which sounds gimmicky but actually works. The 1800s Texas decor is delightful, all wood and old-timey charm. The chicken pot pie was excellent, a warm, hearty hug in a bowl. The staff offered helpful menu guidance, which I needed because I have no idea what half this stuff is. The music and atmosphere were pleasant, not too loud, not too quiet. Parking is convenient across the street, which is a miracle in this town. I felt like a cowboy, but with better hygiene. I will return when I need a dose of history with my meal.

Otro Bar has a stellar Riverwalk location that makes me feel important just standing there. The service was outstanding, with staff who actually seem to care about whether you enjoy your drink. The off-menu fish tacos were delicious, a secret I am now sharing because I am a terrible secret-keeper. The atmosphere is stylish and inviting, like a bar that has its life together. The views of the Riverwalk are decent, good for people-watching. I pretended to be a local, but the tourists saw through me. That is fine. I will just go back for the tacos and try again.

Personalized insult hats worth framing
Cheap, tasty $4 margaritas
Crispy shrimp and hot tots
Unforgettable, laugh-filled Riverwalk stop

Dick's Last Resort is a place where the staff is playfully rude, and I mean that as the highest compliment. The personalized insult hats are worth framing, and I am currently debating where to hang mine. The four-dollar margaritas are cheap and tasty, a dangerous combination. The crispy shrimp and hot tots are exactly what I want when I am being yelled at by a waiter named Chad. It is an unforgettable, laugh-filled Riverwalk stop, the kind of place you go with friends and lose your voice from laughing. I had a headache from the noise and the laughing. It was the best headache of my life.

Waxy's is an Irish pub that feels like a beloved friend, familiar and comfortable. The service was friendly and attentive throughout, even when the place got busy. The flavorful appetizers are worth ordering, and I ordered too many, so trust me. The Celtic steak sandwich was tasty, a proper pub sandwich with no nonsense. The atmosphere is beloved for a reason; it feels like everyone knows each other, even if they do not. Easy River Walk access is a bonus, so you can stumble in and out with great efficiency. I may have had one too many, but the bartender did not judge. Or maybe he did. I could not tell.
