I have a confession: I’ve eaten a lot of terrible delivered pizza in this town, and I’m not afraid to hold a grudge against a cold, sad slice. San Antonio’s delivery game is a gamble, but when you win, you win big, whether you’re craving a honey-kissed pie from Barbaro or a greasy, beer-soaked Mike’s Special from The Growler Exchange.

I’ve tested the range, from the coal-fired char of Grimaldi’s to the gooey calzone beasts at Pizza Classics, and I’ve got the stretchy-cheese receipts to prove it. My patience is short, my standards are high, and my sauce-sopping skills are legendary.

So skip the guesswork and scroll on—your next dinner is hiding in plain sight.

Hot, fresh, and quick delivery
Huge, delicious calzone portions
Friendly phone and delivery staff
Solid chicken fettuccine Alfredo

Pizza Classics is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever gamble on a new joint. The delivery is hot, fresh, and faster than my patience usually allows, which is a miracle in this town. The calzone is a beast, huge and stuffed with enough cheese to make a cardiologist weep, but you'll thank me later. The chicken fettuccine Alfredo is surprisingly solid, creamy without being a gloppy mess. Even the phone staff sounds like they genuinely like their jobs, which is rarer than a decent slice around here. If you want dinner without the drama, this is your move.

Savory blackened salmon and sauce
Authentic home-style Italian cooking
Great staff, even better food
Excellent dine-in and takeout
Leftover sauce worth sopping up

Sorrento Pizza & Restaurant is the Italian home cooking your nonna would approve of, assuming your nonna was a fan of blackened salmon. That salmon arrives with a savory crust and a sauce I'd gladly drink through a straw, and the rest of the menu follows suit with that same authentic, no-nonsense soul. The staff is great, and the food is even better, whether you stay for a leisurely dine-in or grab it to go. Fair warning: the leftover sauce is so good you'll be sopping it up with bread long after the pizza is gone. Just accept it.

Sauce worth licking plate
Brick oven crispy-soft crust
Fresh mozzarella, killer tomatoes
Don’t think, just order
Hummus alone brings me back

Il Forno is the pizza place that makes me want to lick the plate, and I'm not embarrassed to say it. The sauce is that good. The brick oven gives the crust a crispy-soft texture that's practically a religious experience, and the fresh mozzarella paired with killer tomatoes is a combination that should be illegal. Don't think, just order, because deliberation is a waste of time when perfection awaits. Even the hummus alone brings me back, which is weird for a pizza joint, but I'm not complaining. Just trust me and go.

Main Street Pizza & Pasta is proof that love is an ingredient. The pizza comes out cooked perfectly, never with those annoying cold spots, and it tastes like someone actually cares, not like luck. Both the pizza and pasta are delicious, and the whole place is easy to find and order from, which is a rarity these days. The food is so photogenic it deserves a spot on your feed, but you'll be too busy eating to snap a pic. I practically skipped out the door with a full belly and a happy heart.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria brings the coal-fired magic, and that char is worth every penny. The pizzas arrive hot and quick, with that slightly smoky edge that sets them apart. I sat at the bar, and Sofia the bartender was a shining star, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The 'Duo' has a spicy kick that woke up my taste buds, and the full bar service means you can pair your slice with something stiff. If you're in the mood for a classic done right, this is a solid pick.

Eight years of regret
Every bite was amazing
Worth every missed visit
Son-approved five-star worthy

I have eight years of regret to confess, and it's all because I waited too long to try Yaghi's New York Pizzeria. Every bite was amazing, from the crust to the cheese to the perfectly balanced sauce. My son, who is pickier than a cat at a fish market, gave it five stars without hesitation, and that's basically a Nobel Prize in his book. So yes, it was worth every missed visit, and now I'm mad at myself for all the mediocre slices I ate instead. Do yourself a favor and don't repeat my mistake. Go now.
